A running toilet usually means water is leaking from the tank into the bowl. The most common culprits are a worn flapper that no longer seals, a fill valve that won't shut off, a float set too high so water spills into the overflow tube, or a chain that's tangled and holding the flapper open. A running toilet can waste 200 gallons a day, which shows up fast on a Michigan water bill.
Lift the tank lid and watch the water. If it's trickling into the overflow tube, lower the float. If the flapper looks warped or has mineral buildup, it probably needs replacing – a $10 part. Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank; if color shows up in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is leaking.
If a new flapper and float adjustment don't stop it, the fill valve or flush valve seat may be worn, or the toilet may be cracked. Our toilet repair plumbers fix running toilets the same day, and if the toilet is old and inefficient we can install a water-saving replacement.
