Every drain has a P-trap that holds water to block sewer gas. If a floor drain, guest bathroom or basement sink isn't used for weeks, the water evaporates and the smell comes through. Pour a gallon of water down the drain – if the smell goes away, that was it.
A failed wax ring under the toilet lets sewer gas escape at the base, especially if the toilet rocks. Blocked or disconnected plumbing vents also force gas back into the house and cause gurgling drains.
If the smell is strongest in the basement or outside, or comes with slow drains and backups, the sewer line may be cracked or blocked. A sewer camera inspection shows exactly where the problem is, and sewer line repair stops the smell at the source.
